July 17, 2008 | 10:40 AM The following occurred at the July 14 meeting of Duluth City Council.
• A resolution was unanimously approved 5-0 to go ahead with two construction projects: the sidewalks along Ga. 120 and the Duluth Gateway. The former will build sidewalks along the highway from the Monarch School to the Buford Highway intersection at a cost of $744,000. It will come with improvements to the pedestrian crossings downtown as well.
The latter will entail many improvements to the Buford Highway/Ga. 120 interchange, including new crossings, medians and sidewalk ramps. This improvement will cause safer access to downtown for pedestrians. Cost is $769,559.
• Several residents addressed council in protest of the proposed "Ridgeway Connector" – a proposed traffic project near downtown Duluth. This project will attempt to link five roads – Ridgeway Road, West Lawrenceville Street, McClure Bridge Road, Irvindale Road and the proposed Hospital Connector – with a roundabout to cause an ease in traffic congestion.
The residents, who have properties adjacent to this planned project expressed concern for traffic and the safety of their children.
"I don't think this is a good idea. I like to ride my bike and there will be cars going by really fast," said Caroline Corley, one of the children in question.
Councilmember Doug Mundrick said it is a perplexing issue because the number one concern of residents is easing traffic congestion, but that no one seems to want projects that are near their property.
"We are doing the best we can now, and that's what the engineers have decided the solution is," he said. "It's up to council to vote and we've thought about this a long time."
